Death toll due to use of toxic cough syrup in Gujranwala has mounted to 17 as two more people died on Friday. According to Medical Superintendent (MS), District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Gujranwala, Dr Anwar Amanullah, more than 30 people affected by consuming poisonous cough syrup were shifted to hospital during last few days.

Out of them, 11 patients were rushed to Lahore's Mayo Hospital for emergency treatment. However, two of them could not survive. Dr Anwar Amanullah said that affected people had taken heavy dose of Tyno syrup which proved fatal. The deceased include Nandi Pur's former Naib Nazim Irfan Latif, Munir, Bilal, Irfan, Saeed, Arshad, Mubashar, Wasim, Yousuf, Shafiq, Muhammad Zahid, Rafique and Allah Wasaya. Other victim's identity was not confirmed. Punjab government has vowed to take stern action against the company's owners and others responsible for the incident but no arrest has been made so far.
